What Is a Canvas Transfer?

Canvas Transfers have made it possible for everyone to enjoy priceless art at an affordable price point. A Canvas transfer is created from a print through a process that lifts the ink and image from the paper and transfers it directly onto artist quality canvas. If done properly, the result is a stunning reproduction of the original artwork that has the appearance of an original oil painting. The process of creating a canvas transfer is complex and is generally performed by highly skilled artisans with years of training.

Museum Wrap and Gallery Wrap Canvas Transfers

Once the canvas transfer process is complete, the canvas is then stretched and wrapped around custom stretcher bars. The stretcher bars have a standard depth of 1 inch. You may also select the option of having extra deep stretcher bars in which case the stretcher bars have a depth of 1 1/2 inches. The canvas can be attached to the stretcher bars using either the gallery wrap or museum wrap method. In the museum wrap process, (shown in Figure 1), extra white canvas is wrapped around the sides of the stretcher bars and stapled to the bars in the back. No part of the actual image is wasted using this method. You may also select black sides for your museum wrap canvas transfer. In the gallery wrap process (shown in Figure 2), canvas with part of the the actual image is wrapped around the sides and stapled to the stretcher bars in back. The Canvas image is reduced by approximately 1 1/2 inches on every side using the gallery wrap method. Because of this image reduction smaller prints are usually transferred to canvas using the museum wrap process.

Brushwork

A canvas transfer can be further enhanced through the application of brushwork. Brushwork authentically reproduces brush strokes present on the original artwork. During the application of brushwork, clear acrylic paint is applied to the canvas in order to simulate the brushstrokes present on the original painting. This process adds visual and textural depth to the transfer. Brushwork enhances the vibrancy and realism of a canvas transfer. The application of brushwork is complex and should be performed by experienced artisans. (See Figure 3)
